The United Nations Office in Almaty hosts an international round table dedicated to the International Day against Nuclear Testing.
The event was organized jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Almaty, the UN Information Office in Kazakhstan and al-Farabi Kazakh National University. As it is known, on August 29, 1991 the largest Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in the world was closed by the Decree of the First President of Kazakhstan, N.A.Nazarbaev. This date was approved by the initiative of Kazakhstan at the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly as the International Day against Nuclear Testing. The UN General Assembly called for intensified efforts by the UN, states of the world, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to stop nuclear testing all over the world.
The purpose of the round table is to implement a dialogue on international security through the active participation of the young generation of the country.
The event was moderated by Mr. Vlastimil Samek, the Representative of the UN Department of Global Communications in Kazakhstan.
Then, the speech was delivered by Mukhambetkaly Myrzabayuly Burkitbayev, the first vice-rector of Al-Farabi KazNU. The round table included short-term video clips and presentations on specific goals and plans for the future, as well as international events on global issues.
There were such speakers as Burkitbayev M.M, the first Vice-Rector of Al-Farabi KazNU, Samek Vlastimil who is the representative of the UN Mission for International Relations in Kazakhstan, Iskakov Yu. A., the Head of the Representative Office of the Foreign Ministry of Almaty the Minister of Foreign Affairs, A.H. Arystanbekova – the first and permanent Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan, professor, and Director of the Center for Security and Cooperation of Al-Farabi KazNU, professor Bayzakova K.
Mrs. Arystanbekova presented the materials she had prepared for the audience. In her report, she briefly pointed out how Kazakhstan signed a decree on the cessation of nuclear testing on September 30, 1996, as well as on the closure of the site for nuclear testing and accomplished work in the context all over the country.
Besides, the round table was attended by the plenipotentiary ambassadors of Germany, Russian Federation and the Republic of Kyrgyzstan in Almaty.
Apparently, video materials on the theme of the round table were presented. At the end of the conference, a questionnaire was organized among the guests, and students and participants of the meeting thanked the organizers of the event.
