Afghan Youth Day at the Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development

 

On October 18, 2019, the Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development and UNAI  Hub at KazNU co-hosted “Afghan Journalism in Afghanistan”, dedicated to Said Faramarz, a graduate of the faculty of pre-university training (2011), the faculty of journalism (2015) at KazNU.

An activist of the UN model program “New Silk Road”, a talented journalist and correspondent of TOLOnews (TBC), died on September 5, 2018 in Kabul with his accomplice Razim Ahmadi during the terroristic explosion.

Afghan Youth Day was organized jointly by the UN Information Office in Kazakhstan, the Almaty office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Almaty and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Guests got familiar with the photo exhibition “Journalism in Afghanistan” which showed a particular interest. The film “Said Samim” was presented made by a PhD student Rushanova.

Sergey Karpov, a Communication Department Coordinator at Almaty UNESCO Cluster Office made a report about the case of Samim Said at the UNESCO Observatory. The IRA Consul General in the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Osman Sheryar noted the mission of the embassy for the safety of journalists. Moreover, AFG-KAZ Kazakhstan – Chairman of the Afghan Association for Development and Partnership Bitimov Omirtay proposed to award Said Samim the award “For Courage for Journalism”. Also, there was the proposal to open an Afghan Center for Journalism at al-Farabi KazNU.

In particular, the event was attended by the university administration, the UN Information Bureau, the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the diplomatic missions of Afghanistan and the Afghan youth studying in Almaty.

This day will inspire young people to engage in journalism for their country and strengthen international cooperation between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan.
